Mahopac, New York is a hamlet in the town of Carmel, the County Seat of Putnam County, with it's own school district. Lake Mahopac, where the hamlet orginally got its name, contains three islands, Fairy, Petre, and Canopus which are all privately owned. Fairy Island sports multiple homes accessible via a short causeway; Petre Island boasts a single Frank Lloyd Wright designed residence called the A. K. Chahroudi Cottage; and Canopus has undeveloped land available for purchase. Boating, fishing and other water sports are permitted on the lake. Besides Lake Mahopac, other lakes include Lake Baldwin, Lake MacGregor, Kirk Lake, Lake Casse, Long Pond, Wixon Pond, Bryant Pond and Lake Secor.

Originally inhabited by the Wappinger Indians, the land upon which the hamlet now sits was purchased by Adolphus Philipse, son of a wealthy Anglo-Dutch gentryman, in 1697. Home to the Carmel Town Hall, the community today is a busting commuter town with a historic village center, numerous parks and recreational areas and easy access to New York City.

On the night of April 26, 1777, after learning the news that the British had begun burning nearby Danbury, Connecticut, sixteen-year-old Sybil Ludington rode her horse, Star, the entire night through the towns of Carmel, Kent Cliffs and Farmers Mills warning those along the way that the British were coming before returning home at dawn. A statue memorializing the female Paul Revere sits alongside Lake Gleneida.

By the mid-1800s, the hamlet emerged as a popular summer resort community, with city residents arriving via the newly-built New York Central Railroad and vacationing on 587-acre Lake Mahopac. Today, the lake offers boating, fishing and other watercraft sports along with campgrounds and beaches. Other popular sites include Mahopac Falls, Putnam County Park, Lake Gleneida and the Centennial Golf Club.

The Mahopac Central School District is divided into six schools: The Falls School, an all-kindergarten facility; three 1-5 grade schools called Lakeview, Fulmar Road, and Austin Road; Mahopac Middle School and Mahopac High School. Mahopac Central's mission is to ensure that every student acquires the skills, knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills prerequisite to operate effectively in the broader community and lead a successful, productive life in a changing world.
