The town of Carmel is located in Putnam County, and the south town line borders Westchester County, covering 36 square miles. The Town of Carmel includes the county’s largest hamlet, Mahopac, as well as Mahopac Falls. The town is dotted with many beautiful lakes and reservoirs that contribute to one of the County's biggest assets, its magnificent scenery.
Carmel offers a great commute into White Plains, Peekskill, or Danbury, CT, and is a short distance to Metro North train service to Manhattan. Two airports, Westchester County and Stewart, are both within 30 minutes. Mass transit is available to large shopping areas around the county and into Westchester County, or stay close to home by visiting any number of shopping strips or downtown hamlets in the area. Housing runs the gamut from older historic homes to newly constructed contemporaries, affordable condominiums to high-end townhouses, and rambling rural homesteads to planned subdivisions.
Many of the communities within the town enjoy deeded lake rights. The largest lake in Carmel, Lake Mahopac, measures 6.5 miles in circumference and offers residents all the pleasures of year-round water sports, including 2 marinas with boat launches. Fishing, by permit only, is quite popular on the many reservoirs. Lake Gleneida provides a scenic backdrop to the historic village of Carmel, the county seat since 1812 when Putnam was first formed. The original Greek Revival courthouse dates to 1814, the second oldest in NY State; it has recently undergone extensive renovations to preserve its structural integrity. The statue of Sybil Ludington, commemorating her historic ride during the Revolutionary War, commands a place of prominence in front of the lake. Carmel boasts many parks, fields and open spaces, including Veteran’s Memorial Park where memorials honor service men and women from all branches of the military. The site includes a museum, along with areas to hike, swim, fish, play ball, skate, or cross-country ski. It also hosts an annual 4-H Fair, dog and horse shows, and other seasonal celebrations. The largest natural area in the county, Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, is located in nearby Putnam Valley. The park includes approximately three miles of the Appalachian Trail.
Golf enthusiasts can take advantage of two world-class and championship public courses, the 27 holes of Centennial Golf Club and the 18-hole Putnam National Golf Club. And if cycling is your passion, there’s the Tour de Putnam annual cycling festival with routes of 15 – 100 miles for all levels of riders, traveling through the beautiful countryside.
The Putnam Arts Council and Belle Levine Arts Center showcase the performing, visual and literary arts through classes, exhibits and performances throughout the year, and the Putnam Children’s Discovery Center offers programs from babies to teens in science, drama and art. Find musical performances, theater, and even Japanese cultural classes at various sites throughout Carmel.
Carmel High School was again listed by Newsweek as one of Americas Top High Schools. Regents Reports continue to provide positive information, with improved passing and mastery results in many areas. The high school also had dramatic increases to college application and acceptances in the past two years. The student body is also encouraged to join in extracurricular and community service activities. Over 200 Juniors and Seniors volunteer in the 9th Grade Mentoring Program, to mentor our incoming students for a full year. The George Fischer Middle School provides a safe and nurturing setting for students to realize their potential academically and socially.
Carmel offers something for everyone in its housing inventory, cultural and recreational opportunities, scenic beauty, and quality of life.
