North Salem is a town in the northeast part of Westchester County, bordering Putnam County to the north and east town line of Connecticut. The Town of North Salem includes the hamlets of Purdys, North Salem, Croton Falls, and Salem Center. North Salem is home to prominent farms and estates, handsomely restored historic residences, breathtaking contemporary homes designed to capture the beauty of their surroundings, and modest homes of all types.
Horses are, by far, the Town's foremost attraction and provide a livelihood for many of the residents. There are many renowned stables located here, along with miles upon miles of bridle trails amid the magnificent countryside. Land conservation efforts are high priority, preserving open spaces such as the 1,000-acre Mountain Lakes Park and the serenity of the Titicus Reservoir where fishing is allowed only by special permit. Cultural attractions in North Salem include the Hammond Museum with its Japanese Stroll Garden, plays and performances at the Schoolhouse Theatre, and the North Salem Vineyards.
While bucolic North Salem is considered to be the last of the "wide open spaces" in Westchester County, it is still convenient to major commuting routes via car, air, and rail, with 2 Metro North stations offering service to mid-town. Retail business is not the Town's top priority, but a 10-15 minute trip in any direction will provide access to all the merchants you need. The attraction to North Salem is simple: it offers a sophisticated rural atmosphere with a pastoral serenity that is unique.
North Salem is served by two school districts, North Salem Central School District and the Katonah-Lewisboro School District. The Katonah-Lewisboro school district serves the portions of the town of North Salem, including the hamlet of Katonah, the town of Lewisboro, and portions of the town of Pound Ridge. It has a high school, middle school, and four elementary schools. The North Salem Central School District incorporates the rest of the town and Putnam County towns of Brewester and Carmel as well as some Somers residents.
The North Salem School District is small district composed of Pequenakonck Elementary School and North Salem Middle/High School. The district is a model public school district, identified by its focus on the development of students of all abilities. Most of all, it will produce motivated and competent learners, capable of solving the intellectual, emotional, and ethical problems they encounter and of reaching their personal goals. All stakeholders, students, parents, faculty, staff, administration, Board of Education, community, will share responsibility for student development. In their respective roles, they will exceed expectations through a process of continually: setting challenging goals and plans, executing them with promptness and innovation, measuring and evaluating the results, recognizing performance, and improving.
