The Village of Pleasantville is "home, sweet home" for over 7000 residents and is located within the town of Mount Pleasant. Its name is synonymous with extraordinary neighborliness, volunteerism, tranquility and tolerance, attributes that are embraced by all who live or work here.
Settled in 1695 and formerly known as "Clark's Corners," the Village was once a stop along the Underground Railroad. Pleasantville became an autonomous local government in 1897. The original home of The Readers Digest Corporation, the Village is now a regional destination, well reputed for the quality of its public services, public schools, fine arts, dining, and community experiences.
The Village of Pleasantville is served by two public school districts, Mount Pleasant Central School District and Pleasantville Union Free School District.The Mount Pleasant Central School District covers all the hamlets of Hawthorne and Thornwood, and portions of the hamlet of Valhalla and the village of Pleasantville. The district has two elementary schools, Columbus Elementary School in Thornwood and Hawthorne Elementary School in Hawthorne, and one middle and high school. It is the primary goal of the district to permit each student to fully develop his or her potential as a responsible constructive citizen of our society and in that society to be self-sufficient and self-fulfilled individual.
The Pleasantville Union Free School District has one elemetary school, one middle school and one high school. The district believes that all students are unique and can be educated in a manner consistent with their abilities, learning styles, individual interests and talents. The district’s purpose is to provide all students with the means to acquire skills, knowledge and values enabling them to be healthy, competent, contributing and responsible members of society. To affect the future in a positive way, we accept the challenge and embrace the responsibility of providing an excellent education so that all students may attain their potential.
