A hamlet within the Town of Yorktown, Mohegan Lake is 2.9 square miles of compressed small-town bliss. There is something special about this chunk of land cozily nestled amid homes, small businesses and parks that bring the community together. From strolling around glittering bodies of water, such as the Camp Field Reservoir and the Hudson River to relying on the local heroes of the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association to filling their bellies with a warm meal at the Dutch Barn Restaurant, residents and visitors of Mohegan Lake find peace and happiness day after day.
The Mohegan Lake Improvement District was established in 1975, by joint action of the Town Boards of Yorktown and Cortlandt to manage the 105-acre Lake Mohegan. The lake was formed in the last great ice age, but since 1900, has experienced cultural eutrophication. The lake has become increasingly prone to algae blooms, and local residents used copper sulfate to "manage" the lake for many years. About a mile long, the lake was also used for power boating, sail boating, swimming, fishing and ice skating. Not to mention the benefits of looking at the beautiful water and enjoying the company of hundreds of species of plants and animals. The Cortlandt Town Center is a large shopping center loacated on Route 6 in Mohegan Lake. The North County Trailway is a bike trail also located in the vicinity of Mohegan.
The Lakeland Central School District is the largest suburban district in the county. Its borders push into Putnam County, then swings south almost to Peekskill. District students live within six different towns in two counties: Westchester County includes the Town of Yorktown (Crompond, Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, Yorktown Heights), Town of Cortlandt (Cortlandt Manor), and a small area in the Town of Somers; Putnam County includes areas in the Town of Carmel, Town of Philipstown (Garrison), and Town of Putnam Valley.
