The City of White Plains is located in mid-point Westchester County, just 24 miles north of Manhattan. This urban-like town, often dubbed a “mini-New York City,” offers a number of attractions for visitors and residents to enjoy.
White Plains has two Metro-North train stations, White Plains and North White Plains and is just 15 minutes from the Westchester County Airport. White Plains is known for its history, which is visible in many locations, none more so than Battle Hill which display’s a replica of a cannon used by George Washington. During September and October 1776, troops led by Washington took up positions in the hills of this area. Troops fought against British General William Howe in an infamous fight known as the Battle of White Plains. Three days after the battle, Washington withdrew north of the village. But after several clashes, on November 5th, White Plains was left to the Continentals.
White Plains is the leading retail center for Westchester County. All of the nationally-known department stores can be found in this bustling city-Neiman-Marcus, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom's, Tiffany's, as well as the Macy's.
For live entertainment, the White Plains Performing Arts Center features a variety of stage productions throughout the year. While shopping in downtown White Plains, visit Renaissance Plaza, a business district that is home to a fountain that runs 48,000 gallons of recycled water through over 100 jets and spouts.
The White Plains Public Schools have a national reputation for excellence. They have been rated among the top ten school districts in the United States by Expansion Management Magazine. The high school, which has a nearly 100 percent graduation rate, offers an academic program with honors and advanced placement courses, as well as a vocational training program. Eighty-five percent of White Plains High School graduates go on to higher education.
“The City in the Park” offers outstanding recreational and cultural facilities. The Recreation and Parks Department offer one hundred sports and athletic programs, instructional classes, camps, cultural activities, ice skating at Ebersole Ice Rink and special events. These local options are enhanced by the County’s 18,000 acres of parkland, beaches, trails, golf courses & boating facilities. A state-of-the-art library is located downtown and shows and event may be enjoyed at the Westchester County Center and the Westchester Conservatory of Music.
