Dobbs Ferry, New York Homes for Sale

Jan Dobbs and his wife, Abigail, moved into the Village, which was then known as Wysquaqua. Their son, William created a ferry service that used to ferry people across the Hudson River at Willow's Point. Members of the Dobbs family ran the ferry until 1759. It was incorporated with the Town of Greenburgh in 1783 and combines spectacular views with charming neighborhoods. In honor of the Dobbs family, the village was renamed Dobbs Ferry in 1882.

During the American Revolution, Dobbs Ferry played a predictably important role as a ferry landing. Information could be sent via boat to troops encamped on the opposite banks of the Hudson. In 1781, American and French troops waited in the Dobbs Ferry area for Admiral de Grasse's decision on whether the major campaign of the War would be fought in New York or Virginia. In 1800, Dobbs Ferry was a simple rural village with farms, a tavern, a boat landing and a ferry. In the 1820s, farm land was parceled into smaller tracts and sold. Steamboats transported goods and passengers to and from New York City.

Its view of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the Palisades makes it difficult to comprehend its close proximity, just 20 miles, to New York City. A vibrant downtown combines casual pubs and restaurants with specialty retail shops and artists' galleries. Outdoors enthusiasts are drawn to Dobbs Ferry for its waterfront park, to hike along the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway, or hit the fairways at Ardsley Country Club's championship golf course.

The Dobbs Ferry School District consists of three schools: Dobbs Ferry High School, Dobbs Ferry Middle School and Springhurst Elementary School. The Dobbs Ferry High School is a small, exemplary four-year comprehensive school with a strong college preparatory program serving a wide range of students. Over 90% of graduates pursue further educations. The faculty is deeply involved in the development and refinement of programs and encourages students to participate in activities that demand high levels of responsibility and commitment. The Springhurst education is based on a rigorous curriculum (which leads to consistently outstanding performance on standardized tests) and includes a variety of innovative opportunities and programs. The Dobbs Ferry School District small class sizes that result in close student/teacher interaction and fosters a healthy environment, suited to the needs of each individual student.
