Hawthorne, New York Homes for Sale

Hawthorne is an unincorporated hamlet inside the Town of Mount Pleasant. It was once known as Hammond’s Mills as a part of the Philipsburgh estate, which was owned by Frederick Philipse. The village was renamed Unionville after the Revolutionary War. The hamlet consisted mostly of farmers. The Reformed Chruch of Unionville (Hawthorne Reformed Church) was built in 1818. In 1847, a one-room school house was built. A railroad station was built here in 1847, and a post office established in 1851.

The village was finally named Hawthorne in honor of Rose Hawthorne, the founder of the Rosary Hill Home, where patients suffering from incurable cancer were cared for. The Home was established in 1901 by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. Over the past 100 plus years, the Sisters have lovingly served the special end-of-life needs of our patients and their family members. The Home is dedicated to providing palliative care to persons afflicted with incurable cancer. It is open to all who meet the Admissions Qualifications. Rosary Hill is a free home for persons who cannot afford to pay for care. Rosary Hill Home is still operated by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne and is located on a hilltop on Linda Avenue.
